Life Skills

At South East Self Defence, students are equipped with essential life skills that go beyond physical self-defence. The programs emphasize conflict resolution and communication skills, helping students navigate and resolve disputes peacefully. Additionally, students develop emotional resilience, learning to manage their emotions effectively in stressful situations. The curriculum also includes delayed gratification, teaching the importance of patience and long-term goal setting, and stress management techniques to cope with the pressures of modern life.

Safety Skills

Self Defence

Allan Waddell is the chief instructor of South East Self Defence, an organisation that delivers self-defence, safety strategies, life skills and fitness to people from 4 years to adult

  • Allan Waddell has studied for many years in Martial Arts both physically and mentally.
  • Allan has achieved his black belt in Jujitsu and Karate and has also studied Judo.
  • Allan has worked with Community Policing providing student safety programmes to High School students.
  • Allan is currently a Level 3 coach with the Australian Jujitsu Federation
  • Allan is also a Member of the Martial arts Professionals.

 Allan has worked in the military (army) where he received the Australian Defence Medal, security industry, motivation industry, financial services, management (hospitality) and since 1999, along with his wife Suzanne, the owner of his award-winning school – South East Self Defence.

Allan has trained in the martial arts for 30 years and has been graded in jujitsu, judo and karate. He has also received formal training in kung fu, tai chi and chi gong.

Allan is also a level 3 coach recognised by the Australian Jujitsu Federation, first aid qualified and an Australian Sports Commission trained deliverer for the active after school communities programme.

Allan has worked as a self-defence consultant for the Crime Prevention Unit (Sunshine Coast Community Policing) delivering the protective behaviours and physical options programme to sunshine coast teens. This programme won a gold award from the commissioner.

Some schools where this programme has been delivered are Mountain Creek State School, Sienna Catholic College, Maroochydore State High School, St Johns College (Nambour), Kawana State High School, Burnside State High School.

Allan has worked with the Sports Commission in their active after School communities programme, where he won gold for the 5-star community coach award. Allan has worked with the following schools in this programme and many of them multiple times; Bli Bli State School, Coolum State School, Maroochydore State School, Mooloolaba State School, Immanuel Lutheran College, Chancellor Park State College, Pacific Lutheran College, The Montessori School, Currimundi State School, Palmwoods State School, Woombye State School, Glenview State School, Kuluin State School, Mapleton State School, Bokarina State School, Pacific Paradise State School, St Andrews Anglican College, Nambour Christian College.

Other groups Allan has worked with are the Student Guild (Women’s Coordinator) Sunshine Coast University, Skills (Sunshine Coast Independent Living Skills), Queensland Police Service (Crime Prevention Unit), Sunshine Coast TAFE (Conflict Resolution Skills), government departments and many women’s self-defence courses.

As part of his leadership through service model, Allan is the author and originator of the “survivors take action” programme. This is a child safety initiative that delivers a child safety lesson to every student in a primary school from prep to year 6. So far over 10000 children have received this valuable lesson and most absolutely free.

Allan’s style of delivery is age-related but generally speaking entertaining, light-hearted, interactive and informative. Every class he runs from 4 years to adult consists of the 4 pillars, life skills, safety skills, fitness and self-defence.

Allan believes that life skills and values are the cornerstones of real personal safety. This alone allows people to make better choices.  Safety skills are the next important thing because with practice they allow students to prevent situations from occurring or at least have some de-escalation and distraction skills.

Fitness allows a person to move their body, to participate and take advantage of opportunities. It also allows people to compete in this modern society especially when they need to defend themselves.

Lastly is self-defence and the style we teach allows students to defend themselves all the time. Self-defence starts with telling people how you feel and then steps gradually up until physical options are required. Jujitsu is a leverage-based system, so understanding how the body moves and its limitations allow a person to defeat bigger odds.

About Sensei Suzanne Waddell

Suzanne also has studied in Martial Arts for many years and is a mother who worked with nature to continue her Martial Arts training.

Suzanne received her black belt in Karate in 1993 and a Jujitsu Black Belt in 2002 and is a Level 1 coach.

Prior to having children, Suzanne was an administration Manager with a well-known national company and is now responsible for much of the office administration work for South East Self Defence.

Suzanne shares Allan’s belief that everyone should have some form of basic Self Defence skills.
